BACKGROUND: Biliary-enteric anastomosis especially Roux-en Y hepaticojejunostomy is frequently used for biliary diversion in benign biliary strictures. In this study, we present the results of hepaticojejunostomy with external metallic circle. METHODS: Hepaticojejunostomy with external metallic circle were performed in eight male Sprague-Dawley rats. At the end of the third month, anastomoses were analysed for patency and stability of external circles. RESULTS: Relaparotomy revealed that all the anastomoses were patent and circles were in original places. CONCLUSION: To provide the patency of narrow hepaticojejunostomy anastomoses, external metallic circle can be a good alternative to use of internal stents in suitable cases

97-101Possible effects of aqueous garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense Linn.) extracts on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities were investigated in cancerous and non-cancerous human liver tissues and results were compared with those of Fludarabine, a known ADA inhibitor. Ten cancerous and 10 non-cancerous adjacent liver tissues were obtained from patients with metastatic type liver cancer by surgical operations. Kinetic analyses were carried out to establish Vmax and Km values of the reaction catalyzed by ADA in the presence or absence of inhibitor. ADA activity was found to be lower in the cancerous tissues compared with non-cancerous tissues. Aqueous garlic and red clover extracts induced significant inhibition ADA activity in both the tissues. Inhibition percentage was relatively higher in the cancerous tissues as compared with non-cancerous tissues. Furthermore, we observed that inhibition percentage induced by garlic and red clover extracts were higher than those of Fludarabine at the concentrations studied

Synovial cyst is a rare degenerative lesion and especially occurs in old age. Generally, it is more prevalent in the lum- bar spine and especially at L4-L5 levels in female patients. A 67-year-old female patient admitted our hospital with left radiculopathy. Her neurological exam was consistent with radiculopathy. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging revealed cystic lesion which was originating from the left facet joints synovia at L4-L5 level and the dura and the L5 nerve root was compressed by cystic lesion. Cystic mass was totally excised with left L4 partial hemilaminectomy and flavectomy. The patient’s symptoms were improved in early postoperative periods. Synovial cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis, especially in elderly female patients with radiculopathy, and surgical excision of symptomatic patients should be treated primarily
